In the bedroom, nothing says luxury like the little things that turn your bedroom into a lush and expensive-feeling sanctuary. Plus, not everyone has the budget or the time to overhaul an entire room.
So what can you do to make your bedroom look and feel more elevated? As it turns out, you can achieve quite a lot with just a little bit of change. With the help of three interior designers, we’ve rounded up six tips for a more expensive-looking bedroom.
A Cohesive Color Palette
If your bedroom feels muddled and messy, interior designer Brittny Button says it might be time to assess your color palette. A tonal approach to color is sure to make your bedroom feel more luxurious.
“[Think] layered ivories, tans, and browns, and add texture with fabrics,” says Button.
With a warm, neutral base, you can then layer in additional elements to enhance the overall feel of the room and ultimately increase the sense of luxury.
“A linen throw is the ultimate luxury piece thrown on a bed or laying on a brutalist wooden dark stained bench,” says Button. “They represent the ultimate in form and function.”
Dimmable Wall Sconces

One thing you’ll find in most beautiful bedrooms is a great lighting plan. Interior designer Esther Ellard takes it one step further with dimmable wall sconces that will instantly elevate your room to look high-end.
“They give a functional dimension to a bedroom,” says Ellard. “With dimmable wall sconces, you can create the desired ambience for your current mood.”
Best of all, you can buy rechargeable wall sconces that require no additional wiring, making this a truly easy and low-cost luxury.
Lush Flooring

No matter what you have on your floors, interior designer Gregory Feller says adding a lush sheepskin rug will take your bedroom over the top.
“This is super luxurious to step onto when you get out of bed,” says Feller.
But in general, a great area rug is one way to elevate your bedroom—and, as Feller points out, important to get right. If you go too small, it can have the opposite effect.
“Make sure it extends at least 24 inches to the sides and the foot of the bed,” says Feller. “The majority of the rug shouldn’t be hidden under the bed.”
Sculptural Accent Pieces
Because our bedrooms often have a minimal amount of furniture, you should be intentional about the pieces you choose. Picking functional items that look sculptural are a great way to make your space look more expensive.
“This inclusion of functional art allows for whimsy to win,” says Button.
She names floor lamps that look like art pieces or overhead lighting crafted from unique materials as two great ways to approach this tip.
Understated Bedding

Given that your bedroom is primarily for sleeping, then it makes sense that your bedding is one way to create a more upscale feel. Button says to look for understated colors and fabrics, and if you don’t want to splurge on a high-end brand, keep your eye out for similar styles.
“[Look for] brushed linen, cotton with piping edges, or anything that looks Frette-like in design,” says Button.
Well-Tailored Window Treatments

Another great opportunity for elevating your room’s look is with beautiful window treatments. While you of course want something functional, the look of your room’s window treatments can affect the feel far more than you might realize.
Along with the look and style, Ellard says the length is critical, noting that you should particularly want curtains that kiss the floor. Otherwise, too-short treatments can spoil the whole look of the room.
“It almost feels like a really beautiful outfit that was hemmed at an awkward length,” Ellard says.
