8 Underrated Bathroom Paint Colors Designers Wish You Would Use This Year

Other than fixtures, there’s no other area in the bathroom that gets as tons of attention like the wall color. Bathroom paint colors help tie everything the room together and make the space feel true to your personality.

Most modern bathroom colors lean into soft neutrals to help make the room feel spa-like, but these aren’t the only shades that can be used to energize this space. In fact, there are eight underrated bold colors designers say work in your bathroom for the same reasons that aren’t close to neutrals.

If you’re looking to give your bathroom a much needed colorful facelift this year, here are the unthought of shades designers want you to consider.

Blue

Blue

Both of our experts say blue is a top underrated paint color to invite into your bathroom.

“I love blue in a bathroom, it gives a sense of calm and serene,” says Anna Franklin, Founder of and Creative Director at Stone House Collective. “There are various tones of blue so working it into a bathroom with natural stone and tile allows a lot of variety.”

Plus, if you don’t want to commit to a solid shade, opting for a wallpaper pattern that incorporates the shade, like in the picture above, adds more visual interest to the space.

Pink

Pink

Pink is definitely a bold color to add to your bathroom makeover list if you want a unique shade that represents your style and personality.

While pink might seem like an odd choice and a color that’s hard to pair with others, there are actually several shades that mesh well with this joyful color. Use green or blue to make your bathroom feel more eclectic or beachy while keeping a sense of peace and calmness at the heart of the room.

Red

Red

For a warm and daring bathroom, one shade that’s often overlooked is red.

“Red can be a great bathroom color if it’s used as a bold accent to give the room a real statement and energy,” Erin Walters, interior designer at Exactly Designs, says. “A red wallpaper would be a great way to bring the intensity into a bathroom, but also give it some texture and pattern to soften the power of the color alone.”

And, like blue, red holds the power of variety. You can use this shade to fit several aesthetics as long as you style it with the right pieces.

Green

Green

Since the best bathrooms are those that give off a sense of calmness and tranquility, why not use an earthy shade of green for your throne room walls?

“Green is another great color for a bathroom, especially a room with a lot of windows,” Franklin says. “We love using plants in all of our projects and there’s no better place to help purify the air than in a bathroom. This natural element with plants, stone/tile, and also green is truly a relaxing experience.”

Black

Black

If bold and glamorous is your style, then black is definitely the color for your bathroom. This unthought of color instantly adds the feeling of wealth and luxe appeal to your bathroom without overwhelming the space.

To truly accentuate this color in any size bathroom, we recommend styling it with gold fixtures for a bright contrast.

Yellow

Yellow

Yellow is likely another color you might feel too intimidated to experiment with in the bathroom, but it’s actually a great choice.

“Yellow in a bathroom is a great way to bring cheerfulness into a space,” says Walters. “A bright yellow shower is a wonderful way to wake up in the morning!”

Similar to blue, there are several ways you can incorporate this shade on your bathroom walls besides solid paint. Wallpaper or wall tile are great options to add more interest and texture from the various patterns.

Orange

Orange

Walters says orange is another underrated vibrant shade for bathrooms that adds a pop of color for accent purposes.

Mixing with orange walls with natural light from your windows or lighter shades like white in the room helps to soften the color so it’s not as bold.

Purple

Purple

Purple is a great underrated color to use in your bathroom this year since it comes in a variety of shades to fit different moods. Lighter shades, like lavender, evoke brightness and happiness in the bathroom while darker shades of purple lean more into the luxe, glam, or Victorian aesthetics.
